Representation contract review and negotiation for Ontario athletes signing with agents, agencies, or management companies.

THE DIRECT ANSWER

What is an agent or manager agreement?

An agent or manager agreement is the contract between an athlete and a representative that sets out the scope of representation, commission rate, term length, exclusivity, and what happens when either side wants out. Commission typically runs 3–10% depending on sport, league, and scope, but the mechanics — on what income, for how long, with what deductions — vary widely.

WHY IT MATTERS

The relationship that shapes an athlete's commercial career.

The representation relationship shapes an athlete's entire commercial career. A good agent opens doors, structures deals, and fights for value. A bad agent takes commission on deals they had nothing to do with, locks the athlete into long-term exclusivity, and keeps earning long after the relationship ends.

The core levers: commission rate, scope (playing contracts only, or endorsements too, or everything), exclusivity, term, termination rights, sunset provisions, and key-person clauses. Sport-specific regulations add another layer — certified agent rules in hockey, baseball, and basketball each set minimum and maximum standards, but those are the floor, not the ceiling.

We review agent agreements before athletes sign, redline the terms that cost the most, and handle the transitions when athletes move between agencies. We also work with agents on the reverse side when they want to tighten up their own agreements.
